I have some dissenting opinions.
I enjoyed it.It seems a lot of people are looking at the old trio through rose-tinted glasses. A lot more people are drinking the kool-aid of the rose-tinted glasses people. Chris Evans is a little shouty, I will admit that. I liked him when he wasn’t quite so shouty, though. Some of the humour seemed forced, but that’s to be expected. The old team got more scripted as they got to know eachother better, but now that the thing is to be scripted, they’ve thrown it at these people that haven’t worked together long. That will get better. I’ve seen worse episodes with Clarkson/Hammond/May, honestly. They have had many moments of competitions and jokes that I feel fell flat. Also, that catering joke was hilarious. If you disagree, you’re wrong.
The one thing I am on the fence about is the new celebrity segment. First off, I do like the rallycross. But having multiple celebrities has some drawbacks and advantages. I miss the intimacy you would get with the one-on-one interviews, these seem pretty impersonal. The “better first car” and “better best car” bits are good though. Kind of a trade-off for me, I think.
Aaand I think that about sums it up. Be nice to me. Or don’t, it’s just the internet.

I’m of the opinion that new TG is a bunch of really good segments with no glue whatsoever. Evans is actually good in the segments but is insufferable in the studio despite there being no studio segments at all.
TG:USA did itself a massive favor by ditching the studio. It is a damn good TG show now. New TG:UK either needs to have a coherent studio portion to act as the “glue” or just ditch that part and stop trying to force oil out of a rock.

That’s fair. I hope they can figure it out and keep it, I do rather like the studio segments.

It will be interesting to see how the three amigos do when their new show airs. I’ve already joined Drive Tribe and hoping thats got good content as well. I’m anticipating barbs to fly back and forth, since they will be competing for fan loyalty.

I will admit, the OG trio didnt always hit home runs. a few of their segments were boring every once in awhile, but for the most part, top gear was perfect. They would hit home runs more often than not, and they would hit a grand slam at least once every season.
The guys with maybe the exception of May, really knew how to narrate their own features. They spoke so eloquently and really made you feel how they felt about the car. Their segments were well written and well executed. They really talked to each other a lot during their challenges and it was their banter that kept their challenges fun.
The challenges thus far for NTG has been a bunch of quiet people who dont really have any chemistry just trying to get through it. There has been nothing random to come out of their cars as they drove along, there has been no teasing of each other or making fun of each other’s choices, no secretly messing with each others cars, or super silly mini challenges. It just feels like they are just phoning it in.
TGUS has better chemistry than these guys. Now granted, TGUS is in its 3rd season and NTG is just in its 3rd episode, so it can get better, but i think i would rather watch TGUS at this point simply because the chemistry is better, despite the challenges just being american rehashes.
NTG needs to come up with new weird and silly challenges, instead of trying to recreate the magic of the old challenges. Maybe the BBC is trying to show the old trio that TG was a success because of the BBC and not the trio, but so far, they are failing to do so, and their ego must be taking a huge hit since its not as successful with out the OG3.
The OG trio must be laughing at the BBC right now.
They are probably thinking, “that Harris guy is cool, and Rory is like a combination of Hamster and Capt. Slow!”
I’ve seen Eddie Jordan do work for sky sports, and I just feel bad for the way they portray him on the show as this semi-senile old weird uncle. Sure he is a little eccentric and a little flamboyant, but this man did once own a formula 1 team for crying out loud.
The Guest star and SIRCC take way too long, and why does extra gear need guests?! I WANT THE NEWS BACK. I wouldnt mind them hurling one-liners and making jokes about cars or other car news. Id rather see that than the stupid “who as a better car history” crap we see now.
Can we just move Evans and Le Blanc to extra gear, and have Rory, Harris, Jordan and Sabine out there as the main hosts?
